When it first left port at Southampton, England, the S.S.
Titanic barely(刚刚)escaped
a collision(碰撞)with
the ocean liner, New York. 2,300 passengers and crew
remained undaunted(无畏的),
however, as the Titanic continued on its maiden(处女)voyage
toward New York City. The regal(豪华的)ocean
liner was regarded the finest ever built, not only for its
stately interiors but for its highly vaunted(炫耀的)
waterproof(不透水的)compartments.
But on April 15, 1912, some 450 miles from Newfoundland, the
Titanic sped into an iceberg, ripping(裂开)a
massive hole in its unsinkable frame. Within 2 hours, it
sank, drowning 1,595. 745 survived, most of them women and
children, accorded(给予)priority(优先)on
lifeboats, too scarce for the rest.
