Madagascar
Located off
the southeast coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean,
Madagascar is noted for its endemic species. About 90
percent of its wildlife and plants can only be found on this
island.
Conservation International lists Madagascar as one of the
world's 34 biodiversity hot spots.
Madagascar has nearly 550 threatened species, including its
most well–known primate, the lemur. The lemurs are in danger
not only because of habitat destruction, but also because
hunters sell their meat. Some lemurs, like the Indri, get as
large as 20 pounds.
But many scientists and the government of Madagascar say the
pattern of destruction can be turned around and there is a
very real possibility that the habitat that's been
compromised can be restored.
