Winter sports take off in style
(很成功地)in
1924 as the first Winter Olympiad is staged(举行)in
Chamonix(夏木尼),
France. The ski jump, previously almost unknown, thrills(使胆战心惊)spectators(观众)along
with 15 other events involving 8 sports. Sixteen nations are
represented by 280 men and 13 women. The Winter Olympics
offer a particular boost(宣传,推进)to
skiing, a sport which would make enormous strides(进步,进展)within
the next decade. Scandinavians(斯堪的纳维亚人)dominate(统治)the
skiing, as Thorleif Hauge wins 3 gold medals for Norway.
Until now, winter sports were mostly reserved(留作专用的)for
the leisure(闲暇)time
of the extremely well-to-do(富有的).
But the excitement at Chamonix, much of it conveyed(传播)through
movie film, has given a grand new outlook to fun and games
on snow and ice.
