Tourists and athletes take time to shop in the Silk Market August 13th, 2008 @ 4:46pm By Amanda Butterfield If you go shopping in Beijing, get ready to negotiate. We found that you can find just about anything you want in China, but the price is up for debate. We went to the Silk Market, a popular shopping and bargaining market in Beijing, and tried out our bartering skills. Luckily, we were able to pick up a few goodies to bring home. There are five floors of shopping, shopping and more shopping at the Silk Market. You can find just about anything you want here, and you'll meet some interesting shoppers. Vivian is from Beijing and is here with her friend Sayke. They are bartering for silk. "If I want to make a dress, silk is the best material," she explained. The hard part is picking the material. "I'll have to do the red one, or this one. Oh, there's more colors!" Vivian said. We met some U.S. wrestlers picking out fabrics too. "I'm just here shopping around, killing some time between training, experiencing China," U.S. wrestler Dremiel Byers said. We asked Byers for some bargaining tips as we took on the rest of the store. "You gotta be aggressive ‘cause they're aggressive," he said. "I got beautiful tablecloths for a table of eight for 45 bucks, and they threw in the napkins," Vivian said.
