Berlin's Olympic Stadium hosts one of the most dramatic(戏剧性的)and
politically significant(重要的)events
in Olympic history. No expense was spared(分让)by
Adolf Hitler to promote (提升)the
games in Nazi terms of Aryan(雅利安)
racial(人种的)superiority(优越).
But Ohio
State's Jesse Owens confounded(挫败)the
Fuhrer's dogma(教条).
Hitler had referred to Blacks as an inferior(劣等的)race.
Owens looked far from inferior when he won the 100 and 200
meters, the long jump and a relay. In addition to his
unprecedented(空前的)four
gold medals, the modest(谦虚的)Owens
equaled or broke 12 Olympic records. He and several other
Black teammates forced a humiliated(丢脸的)Hitler
to excuse himself from the stadium to avoid having to
congratulate them.
