On July 9, 1877 - the
Wimbledon Tennis Tourney is born.
The All England
Croquet(槌球)Club
at Wimbledon staged the world's first lawn tennis
championship in 1877. By the 1920's, with stars Jean Borotra
and Suzanne Lenglen dominating(支配),
Wimbledon and lawn tennis had graduated from All England to
all-world status. Winning Wimbledon made legends of players
like Fred Perry of Britain and Helen Wills Moody and Jack
Kramer of the US. Even King George VI, then the Duke of
York, had a go there in 1926 but didn't get very far. In the
1950's many stars turned professional while Wimbledon
remained an amateur(业余爱好者)tournament(比赛).
But in 1968, with Australia's Rod Laver holding Center
Court, Wimbledon welcomed the pros and quickly regained its
status as
the world's top tennis tournament.
