The Reverend Martin Luther King
Jr. was the main leader of the civil rights movement in the United States
during the 1950s and the 1960s. King devoted his life to the
elimination (消除)
of racial segregation (种族歧视,
种族隔离) and promotion (促进)
of political and economic equality for all the Americans. King's commitment
(承诺)
of non-violence
protests and his stirring (激动人心的)
speeches earned him anti (反对的)
courses for supports
of millions of people.
In 1963, King led a march
on Washington. People came from all over the country. More
than 200,000 people heard the King's dramatic(生动的)
? for racial equality at the Lincoln Memorial. His speech
that day was the high point of demonstration and defined (定义,阐述)
the moral (道德)bases
of civil-rights movement.

WHAT WAS DEMANDED (要求)
IN THE MARCH ON WASHINGTON
(according to U.S. New & World Report- September 9, 1963)

1. Passage of "meaningful" civil-rights legislation(立法)
at this session of Congress- no filibusting(阻碍议案通过).
2. Immediate elimination(消除)
of all racial segregation in public schools throughout the nation.
3. Protection for civil-rights demonstrations everywhere against police
"brutality" (野蛮的行为).
4. A big program of public works to provide jobs for all the nations's unemployed.
5. A federal (联邦的)
law prohibiting (禁止)
racial discrimination (歧视)
in hiring workmen- either public or
private (私营的).
6. $2-an-hour minimum wage, across the board, nationwide.
7. Self-government for the District of Columbia, where Negroes area 57 per cent of the population.
