Nuclear Energy

Nuclear energy is a relatively new form of energy used by society. Nuclear power is an economical (经济的), but controversial (争议的) method of producing energy.

Nuclear energy is the energy locked in the nuclei of atoms. It can be released (释放) by splitting (分裂) or combining (聚合)-atoms.

The heat produced in a nuclear reactor (反应堆) is used to make steam and electricity in basically the same way as in fossil (矿物) fuel power plants.

Today, nuclear power provides the United States with one-fifth of its electricity demand.

    Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant (CCNPP) 
      is owned and operated by Baltimore Gas and
      Electric Company (BGE). Located on the
      western shore of the Chesapeake Bay in 
      Calvert County, Maryland, the plant was
      constructed (建造) in  the 1970s. Its two 850-
      megawatt (兆瓦特) generating units (发电机组)
        produce enough electricity to meet the needs 
of  more  than 400,000 residential (住宅区的) customers.
